Oils by Francisco BenitezAbout the OilsI have worked in oils ever since my late teens. When I began, I emulated masters of my own Spanish background such as Velázquez and Goya…only to later study classical drawing and painting at the Art Student’s League in New York. When I finished my BFA work I became fascinated with Caravaggio and the Neapolitan Tenebrist School of the 17th century. I became obsessed with the materials and techniques of the baroque artists, only to subsequently discover Pompeii and the vast tradition of ancient Greco-Roman painting. I did a number of series, one called the Black Series, another, the Pompeii Series, and then the Metaphysical Series, before embarking on my encaustic work. After years of working with encaustic, I have come back to oils, which I like to alternate with the encaustic practice. |
